Ready to start your Class 5 or Class 7 driving lessons or prepare for your ICBC road test?
A Class 7L (Learner’s Licence) is the first step in British Columbia’s Graduated Licensing Program (GLP).
You can apply for your Class 7L licence on or after your 16th birthday.
If you are under 19, you will need consent from a parent or legal guardian.
You must also be a resident of British Columbia to apply for or hold a B.C. driver’s licence.
To get your Class 7L licence, you will need to:
Provide the required identification
Pass the ICBC Knowledge Test
Pass a vision screening
Meet ICBC’s licensing requirements
When visiting a driver licensing office, you normally need two pieces of accepted identification: one primary and one secondary ID.
The Class 7 knowledge test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions.
You need at least 40 correct answers out of 50 (80%) to pass.
The test covers important topics such as:
Rules of the road
Road signs and signals
Safe driving
Sharing the road
Driving hazards and responsibilities
The knowledge test fee is currently $15.
As of June 9, 2026, ICBC allows eligible applicants to take the Class 5 and 7 knowledge test either:
Online, or
In person at a driver licensing office
The test has a 45-minute time limit.
The online test must be taken on a desktop or laptop computer with a webcam and stable internet connection. It cannot be taken on a smartphone or tablet.
The test is available in several languages, including English and Farsi (Persian).
Important: Passing the online knowledge test does not mean you are licensed to drive. You must still visit a driver licensing office, complete the required screening and be issued your Class 7L licence before you can drive.
Once you receive your L, you must follow the Class 7L restrictions, including:
Display a red L sign on the back of the vehicle.
Drive only with a qualified supervisor sitting beside you in the front passenger seat.
Have zero alcohol and zero drugs in your blood while driving.
Do not use cellphones or other electronic devices, including hands-free devices.
Do not drive between midnight and 5:00 a.m.
Follow the Class 7L passenger restrictions.
Currently, your qualified supervisor must meet ICBC’s applicable licence and age requirements.
Effective October 19, 2026, the minimum supervisor age will change from 25 to 22.
Also effective October 19, 2026, an L driver may have more than one passenger when the additional passengers are immediate family members, subject to ICBC’s Class 7L rules.
Under the current GLP, you generally need to practise driving with a qualified supervisor for at least 12 months before taking your Class 7 road test.
After passing the Class 7 road test, you move to the next stage of the Graduated Licensing Program: the Class 7 Novice (N) licence.
